The girl in the window - a story about a feral child Can't Post - Read Only Forum!

Possibly one of the saddest stories I've read in a long time, but at least it has a somewhat happy ending involving some of the nicest people on the planet.

The girl in the window

First he saw the girl's eyes: dark and wide, unfocused, unblinking. She wasn't looking at him so much as through him.

She lay on a torn, moldy mattress on the floor. She was curled on her side, long legs tucked into her emaciated chest. Her ribs and collarbone jutted out; one skinny arm was slung over her face; her black hair was matted, crawling with lice. Insect bites, rashes and sores pocked her skin. Though she looked old enough to be in school, she was naked — except for a swollen diaper.

I am speechless. And horrified. My heart goes out to Dani and her new parents.

Poor kid. Her odds were stacked against her from the beginning (a borderline retarded mother and siblings + it is highly likely that she, like her mother and brothers, was also borderline retarded, or worse, from the start). The social workers should have picked up on this from the beginning, and not just look at the filth in which the family was living and leave it at that. Good grief, these people really dropped the ball.

Poor, poor kid. Her adoptive parents are amazing, wonderful people. I hope her biological mother is done breeding.
