Spreading Compassion Through Netflix Can't Post - Sign Up!

http://www.ourhenhouse.org/...ion-through-netflix/

Quote:
Mercy for Animals‘ award-winning documentary, Fowl Play, has been accepted to Netflix. But it won’t become available to watch unless enough people add it to their queue. According to MFA, the film — which was shown at last week’s prestigious New York International Film Festival — “takes viewers on an unforgettable journey behind the closed doors of some of the country’s largest egg production facilities and graphically illustrates the heartbreaking plight of laying hens -condemned to lives crowded inside file-drawer-sized cages.”

I just added it to my queueue. It's now nestled among my episodes of Mad Men and The Wire. I've never seen that green "save" button on Netflix before.

I don't use netflix much, so I couldn't remember if the save button was typically there. It must have to do with the fact that a certain number of people need to put it in their queue before Netflix will actually get copies to send out?

Either way, thanks for adding it to your queue!

I just joined NetFlix yesterday.

Have you seen the movie? Is it suitable for viewing by children? I believe they should be educated about how animals are treated, but I don't want them traumatized. Unless of course they turn on me as teenagers and want to eat meat. Then they are watching it all.

I have not watched it, I never watch these things any more, I just don't need the trauma. I went to the site and watched about 2.5 seconds of the trailer, and couldn't close the tab fast enough - the trailer, at least, starts with baby chicks being gathered in a garbage bag....we know it is the male chicks about to be killed, and we know what happens, I just don't need to see it, and I'm guessing your kids don't either.

I have a feeling that Peaceable Kingdom would be a good one for them. I have heard that it isn't gory, I'd have to check back with people who've seen it to see if it is suitably non-traumatizing for kids.

Another resource you might like is Ninety-Five. I posted about it here if you want to get more of a feel for it - NO gory images at all, but the realities are discussed (along with wonderful pictures of the rescued animals).

There is also a kid's book you might have heard of "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals", which focuses too much (imo) on factory farming (family/small farms are different only in scale) but still is pretty good, and is geared towards kids, so while it has the realities, it's not too bad.

And here's a friend's daughter doing a review of "Our Farm": http://www.vegblog.org/...s-of-farm-sanctuary/

I should add a PS - I put it on my queue anyway. I think it is important to get these videos (or information in whatever form) as accessible and convenient as possible for those who don't know, and who might change when they learn. Putting it on my queue helps make that a possibility, and requires nothing from me. So even though I'm not going to watch it personally, it is on my queue!

Thanks for those resources. I'll check them all.

Some videos surprise me. I recorded "Food Inc." on PBS and thought I'd watch it with the kids. Should have watched it alone first. There were images of cows with port holes in their sides, slaughtered skinned cows and pigs (?) hanging from hooks... Really awful. And it's harder sometimes because the mainstream media seem unfazed by some of these images. I've seen "processing" plant images on Oprah and on the local news.
