not everyone loses weight when they go vegan Can't Post - Read Only Forum!

"...and promising people that they will is unfair. There are plenty of vegans who struggle with their weight. Some overweight vegans feel guilty about their body size because they believe that they aren’t a good advertisement for veganism. But anyone who makes an effort to embrace habits that honor the rights and welfare of animals deserves to feel proud. Veganism is a lifestyle based on a set of beliefs about animal use and there is room for everyone to be a good role model..."

i did lose weight as i went vegetarian and then vegan, but i believe that is because previously i ate absolutely anything i wanted whenever i wanted with zero restrictions. exercise makes a huge difference, though - i've returned to my lazy lifestyle for about a year and i've gained back some weight. i'm the kind of person who really needs to kick their own butt. my mom also lost weight when she started eating veganly, but she has hit a plateau. she has little time for exercise, but she's also not a lazy person. every body is different.

Agreed. I lost 20 pounds when I went vegetarian, but that is combined with the fact that I started seriously exercising at the same time. I didn't lose weight when I went vegan, but my five-pound fluctuations have completely stopped. Even when I only exercise a minimal amount, I only have about a 2 pound variance at max.

This reminded me of a tweet I read the other day about how there aren't any "fat vegans". Obviously not true, everyone is different!

I probably lost 10 pounds after going vegan, but I didn't pay too much attention. I definitely gained plenty of weight on a vegan diet when pregnant though! After 4 babies in 5 1/2 years I weighed 50-60 pounds more than I would have liked. I am now just a few pounds away from returning to my original weight.
I didn't do any one thing in particular, but I when I want to lose weight I do try to eat less in the evening (and definitely drink less in the evening!), exercise more, and eat fewer bready products (and definitely cut out the refined grains). I don't worry too much about fat, though I don't cook with a ton of it since oil just contains sooo many calories, so I just try to be reasonable about it.

If anything, I focus on doing MORE of certain things, instead of thinking of what I'm doing LESS of. More greens, more exercise, more activities and less tv watching, more fun.

It's so easy to fall back into a rut of using whatever comfort food one grew up on as a crutch to get through stressful times or tired evenings. Those habits are hard to break, evening after 20 years vegan!

Sorry friends, I don't agree with you guys. I am vegetarian from the childhood, and now I am 24 years old,and I am getting fatter and fatter day by day. I gain lots of weight. I think exercise is better option than becoming an vegetarian.

The notable difference between vegan, which Fringy is talking about, and vegetarian, which you mention. Namely all the saturated fat and cholesterol in dairy and eggs. If you cut those the diet becomes much healthier. Also, you didn't mention how much processed food you eat, which is easier to find vegetarian than vegan. Any bakery will have vegetarian pastries, cakes, cookies, etc. It's pretty hard to find a vegan selection unless you live in one of the vegan hotspots like NYC, DC, SanFran, LA, etc.

Naturally, absorbing large quantities of butter or sweets special benefit the body will not bring. This is one of the mistakes of those who dream to lose weight quickly, goes to vegetarianism, ignoring the word “diet”. Refusal of a particular type of product is not the key to success in losing weight and do not guarantee receipt of a slender and trim figure. Vegetarian diet to loose weight can be compatible if the person would be wise to apply for planning your diet.
